Job Title: Electrical Engineer

Position Purpose:

Responsible for the design, development, testing, and implementation of Electrical Engineering projects. Leads teams in design of plans, schematics and wire running lists. Maintains good working relationships with clients, staff, and outside contractors. Supervises and supports team members and ensures that established goals and deadlines are met. Ensures compliance with safety regulations and requirements. Keeps superiors informed of status and significant problems.

Essential Functions and Basic Duties:
  1. Responsible for designing, developing, and assembling projects from concept to final assembly.
    1. Technical Leader for individual design and assembly projects for locomotive electrical propulsion, power distribution systems, rotating electric machines, auxiliary power and control systems.
    2. Stays informed of new technologies, trends, and regulations in mechanical and structural engineering. Applies innovative technologies to designs.
    3. Analyze design proposals, specifications, and requirements.
    4. Organize test programs to validate design.
    5. Troubleshoots mechanical and structural systems as required.
    6. Prepares and coordinates reports including proposals, budgets, and construction cost analyses.
    7. Reviews procurement costs ensuring adherence to budgets and timetables.
    8. Evaluates supplier's proposals and related documentation.
    9. Prepares engineering, design, and assembly documents.
    10. Ensures that safety regulations and requirements are met.
  2. Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective communication, coordination, and working relationships with area staff and management.
    1. Delegates and prioritizes responsibilities of area staff.
    2. Interacts with engineering team to assess machine functions and compliance to system specifications.
    3. Tracks and resolves problems promptly and effectively.
    4. Obtains and conveys information as needed.
  3. Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective communication, coordination, and working relationships with customers, suppliers, and outside contacts.
    1. Maintains client relationships. Interprets and implements customer needs.
    2. Ensures that outside parties are well informed of operations and schedules.
    3. Maintains relationships with regional government officials and procures necessary official documents.
    4. Projects and maintains the Company's professional reputation.
  4. Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.
    1. Ensures that work area is clean, secure, and well maintained.
    2. Completes special projects as assigned.
    3. Attends meetings and professional conferences as required.
Level Guide:

Professional Positions with 3 or 4 Levels

Level 1 - Entry/Intermediate. Entry level for Bachelor's degree or commensurate experience. Knows fundamental concepts and is learning to apply these concepts, practices and procedures in a particular field of specialization. Works under supervision, using fairly well established procedures. Work varies from routine to somewhat challenging in character. Little evaluation, originality or ingenuity is required.

Level 2 - Fully competent/journey. Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures in particular field of specialization in the completion of difficult assignments. Usually works under general supervision, conferring with senior staff or leads on unusual matters. Assignments are broad in nature, usually requiring originality and ingenuity.

Level 3 - Senior. Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of a particular field of specialization in the completion of complex assignments. May cross fields. Works with limited supervision, plans and performs work generally involving the larger and more important projects or more than one project. Operates with considerable latitude=de for unreviewed action or decisions.

Leads - Schedule, plans, conducts and may supervise project work. Reviews progress and evaluates results. Recommends changes in procedures. May train junior level employees in technical complexities of assigned work. Reviews progress with management. Assist with the hiring, review, and evaluation of personnel performance. Operates with considerable latitude for unreviewed action or decisions.

Performance Measurements:
  1. Day to day operations of Electrical Engineering design teams run smoothly and timely.
  2. Good business relationships exist with customers and contractors. Concerns are promptly addressed and any problems effectively resolved.
  3. Projects are completed in a timely manner.
  4. Innovative new processes and systems are developed.
  5. Research and development is conducted using standard procedures, and according to effective and efficient practices.
  6. Management is appropriately informed of area activities and of any significant problems. Recommendations for improvements in policies and procedures are provided.
  7. Safety regulations and requirements are met.
Qualifications:

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering or related field. A M.S. Degree is a plus.
  • Registered professional engineering license is a plus.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:

  • Excellent understanding of Company operations and needs.
  • Thorough understanding of Electrical Engineering for Propulsion systems, Power distribution systems, rotating electric machines, auxiliary power systems and control systems.
  • Knowledge of IEEE code requirements.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • 5+ years of progressive experience.
  • Previous project management experience.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Able to prioritize projects.
  • Well organized.
  • Able to operate computer applications (Microsoft Office and engineering software).
  • Good communications skills.
  • Solid leadership abilities.

Working Conditions:

Must work in heavy manufacturing conditions including high places with fall protection, limited chemical exposures as allowed by MSDS, electrical current, moving machinery, etc.
